King Lewanika Lodge is located in Zambia’s Liuwa National Park, a truly off the beaten track destination- remote, wild, beautiful and home to Africa’s second largest wildebeest migration. The luxurious King Lewanika Lodge was the first permanent lodge built in the park, commanding a prime location with stunning views over the plain. Recently taken over by Ker and Downey Zambia, King Lewanika Lodge is ideal for those looking to escape the crowds and experience unique wildlife spectacles.
King Lewanika Lodge is one of Zambia’s most exclusive properties. This remote luxury lodge has just six rooms – all well-spaced out and all designed to maximise the view of Liuwa Plain. There are five luxury safari tents for double occupancy, and one luxury family tent, consisting of two bedrooms and two bathrooms accommodating up to five people. All are beautifully appointed, with a smart style- a blend of the traditional safari aesthetic with all the modern comforts.
Each of the luxury safari tents at King Lewanika Lodge has been designed to maximise the views of Liuwa Plain – the open fronted rooms offer multiple areas to sit back and soak in the views- from the cosy comfort of your bed or the sofa, or from the sun loungers on your private veranda. The rooms feature a choice or indoor and outdoor showers. These are very spacious rooms, a total of 100 square meters (1,076 square feet). Each tented room is 60 square meters in size, together with an additional 40 square meter veranda and outdoor shower.
The Luxury Family Safari Tent is 120 square meters (1,291 square feet) in total. Each Luxury safari family tent is 80 square meters in size, together with an additional 40 square meter veranda. This family unit is set on the edge of the woodland, with uninterrupted views over Liuwa Plain. It is situated closest to the main area, ideal for families.
A wonderful range of activities are offered at King Lewanika Lodge. Game drives (day and night) and walking safaris are offered here. The game vehicles at King Lewanika Lodge are configured as 3 rows of 2 people – ensuring all have a window seat. There is a maximum of 6 people per vehicle, though a seventh person can be accommodated in the front next to the guide if there is a party of seven.
There is also the possibility of boating and canoeing at King Lewanika Lodge between November/December and March, once the rains arrive and the pans start to fill. As there are no hippos and crocodiles, this is one of the safest water safari experiences.
For those staying three nights or more there is the opportunity to sleepout in the wilderness, following the migration or exploring deeper into the park.
Cultural experiences are available too. Liuwa is a prime example of how people and wildlife can coexist and benefit in a shared landscape. Guests at King Lewanika Lodge can visit local communities inside the park, learning about their stronghold culture, such as their traditional fishing methods. The annual Kuombaka traditional ceremony is a highlight, though water level dependent.
Finally, between all activities, a small spa offers some pampering treatments in a peaceful environment.
A safari to Liuwa National Park will appeal to those safari goers looking for something different- to escape the crowds and explore vast and rich plains in search of Africa’s hidden migration. Over 45,000 wildebeest migrate through the park, the second largest in Africa, with large herds of zebra and red lechwe too. Predators follow, including lion, cheetah and spotted hyena. Over 350 bird species are found here too. This is a remote destination, but those who take the time to visit are rewarded with some of the most unique and undisturbed wilderness experiences in Africa. A visit to King Lewanika Lodge and this remote park also offer the opportunity to experience, and be part of, one of Africa’s great conservation success stories.
King Lewanika Lodge is named after the monarch who declared the area protected in the 1880s, and designated Liuwa Plain as a royal hunting ground. Unfortunately, decades of unsustainable resource harvesting caused vast habitat degradation as well as a large decline in species. African Parks were invited to help restore the rich legacy of Liuwa Plain and since then it has become a wonderful conservation success story, bringing a park from the brink of annihilation to a flourishing eco-system.
