Leroo La Tau

Leroo La Tau (meaning “Lion’s Paw”) is a luxury lodge set on the cliffs overlooking the Boteti River, on the western boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The lodge offers wonderful views across the park and good game viewing can be enjoyed from the comfort of the lodge itself as animals come and go from the river. Leroo La Tau offers an interesting, contrasting, safari experience in combination with the Okavango.

Leroo La Tau’s beautifully designed suites are raised on individual wooden platforms to fully embrace the view of the Boteti River and Makgadikgadi NP. There are 12 suites, all ensuite with their own furnished veranda, one of which is especially designed for families. Well-spaced out over 1.5km each of the rooms offers plenty of space and privacy to enjoy the hours between activities. As Leroo La Tau faces east, and enjoys an elevated position, making it also one of the best places in Botswana to enjoy a sunrise.

Fresh from an extensive refurbishment in early 2023 which saw all interiors replaced and redesigned, Leroo la Tau is looking bright and beautiful. Taking inspiration from the dynamics of the zebra migration, the dazzling desert scenes and cultural interactions – the style here reflects the striking elements that make this area of Botswana so unique and interesting.

The main area sits below a large thatched structure captures the essence of a classic bush camp and the extensive decking offers expansive views of the River system below and Parkland beyond. There is a swimming pool to cool off during the hotter hours and also a game viewing hide built into the bank of the river offer superb photo opportunities.

The Boteti is the main outflow of the Okavango Delta and offers a very interesting safari experiencing lies on the frontier between the Okavango and Makgadikgadi. It lay dry for almost two decades but began to flow again in 2009 and once again the river flows below Leroo La Tau.

Activities offered include morning and afternoon game drives into the Park twice daily to find game along the river system and in the bushland just beyond the river’s edge. Boat cruises on the River allow visitors to soak up the tranquillity of this area and photograph inhabitants of this ecosystem (water levels permitting). The riverside Hide is a great way to take time to spot animals and birds in the most unobtrusive manner and guided village tours of nearby Khumaga Village offer a wonderful opportunity to meet local community. Visits to Nxai Pan and Bains Baobabs are recommended, but only available for three night stays (or more).

For those staying 3 nights or more during the dry season (July-October) there is also the option to sleep out under the stars on the salt pans. This is a magical experience and highly recommended for adventurous travellers. The night skies on the salt pans are truly amazing and the chance to sleep beneath a canopy of stars here is not to be missed! The set up is simple but comfortable. Please speak to us for more information.

Between activities the sparkling pool and elegant sun-lounging deck offer a lovely location to relax in during the hotter hours of the day. The central area’s lounge and bar are popular for those wanting to catch up on some reading or enjoy some socialising.

It is important to note that due to the remote location the Makgadikgadi Pans themselves are not visited on daily scheduled activities from Leroo La Tau, unless visiting Baines Baobabs, Nxai Pan and the sleep-out on longer visits.
