Nine Night Okavango and Kalahari Safari

Experience the striking contrast of the harsh Kalahari and lush Okavango in this powerful combination of three luxury tented camps. Perfectly located in private concessions in the Kalahari, West and East Okavango, this is an exclusive safari experience. Shinde is set near permanent water channels ensuring year round water activities, with seasonal water activities also available at Kanana. The Kalahari showcases desert adapted species not seen in the Okavango as well as the endangered rhino. A fantastic year round safari showcasing the amazing diversity of Botswana. Game drives, mokoro rides, boating, walking, photographic hides and san bushman walks combine to deliver a comprehensive Botswana safari.

Exploring the different sides of the Okavango, with two nights in each of the east and west Okavango, one will appreciate how amazingly diverse this rich eco-system is. Both Shinde Camp in the East and Kanana Camp in the west are set near water channels, with Shinde allowing for mokoro and boating year round, a huge advantage over many camps. Morning, afternoon and night drives are also offered here, as well as walking safaris. Being situated on private concessions allows for off-road game driving so tracking animals is unhindered.

For those adventurous souls, sleep out decks are available at Kanana and Dinaka offering guests the opportunity to sleep out under the spectacular stars. (Not available from December-March)

Kanana Camp lies on the private Pom Pom concession, a particularly pretty corner of the Okavango with a string of islands dotted by tall palms and floodplains. Leopards are frequently found here and lions are regularly spotted along with huge breeding herds of elephants. Birders will be delighted by the heronry and broad spectrum of species seen here.

Shinde Camp lies on the Shinde concession – an area regarded as offering some of the most exciting game viewing in the Okavango. Wide open plains attract cheetah while lion roam right across the concessions. Leopard stalk the forests. Plains game are varied and numerous and include Zebra, wildebeest, sable, tsessebe, kudu and more. Large bull elephants are resident near the waters which are home to hippos and crocs too.

Dinaka Camp lies on a private reserve bordering the Central Kalahari game reserve and delivers a fantastic desert safari experience, showcasing very different animals to those found in the Okavango. Desert adapted species include the Kalahari Black Maned Lion, brown hyena, aardwolf, cheetah, oryx, springbok and more. Rhino are commonly seen here. Birding is superb. The Kalahari lies in stark contrast to the lush Okavango. Activities include morning, afternoon and night drives, bushman walks, photographic hide, viewing deck, walks and sleepout decks.

All three camps are operated by Ker & Downey Botswana, known for their small intimate camps and prime locations. Expect a high standard of guiding and service throughout.

This itinerary covers a diverse range of habitats and wildlife encounters. Each of the camps complements each other beautifully ensuring the most comprehensive Okavango safari experience. A classic and good value itinerary recommended at any time of year.

This itinerary can be adapted to suit your preferences, tweaking the number of nights as needed. Extensions to other areas in the region, such as Victoria Falls or Cape Town, can also be arranged.

Day 1, 2 & 3 - Shinde Camp

On arrival in Maun, Botswana you will be met by a representative to assist you with your connection on to a light charter flight to Shinde Camp, a scenic flight of about 25 minutes. Your guide will be waiting on arrival and will transfer your to camp, a game drive of about 15 minutes, depending on sightings along the way.

Having met the team and settled into your room you will then have the chance to enjoy some refreshments while your guide introduces you to the surrounding environment and activities available at Shinde Camp. Being located on a wildlife - rich private concession with access to permanent water, Shinde offers an amazing array of safari activities- morning, afternoon and evening game drives, walking, boating and mokoro rides. Fishing is also available. You will discuss all your interests and preferences with your guide who will plan your days to ensure you make the most of your time here.

Setting off for your first activity that afternoon you will start exploring the stunning lagoon lying in front of the camp and the beautiful open plains which feature in the Shinde Concession. Toasting the setting sun while out and about in the bush you will return for dinner and begin to plan your activities for the following day with your guide.

The next morning you wake early with your choice of hot drink brought to your room and after breakfast you set off for your first full day in the Shinde concession. Perhaps a game drive to track any interesting movements from the cats overnight or a bush walk for a chance to learn about the smaller species and fauna in this unique eco-system.

Returning for brunch you will then have a few hours of siesta, a lovely time to enjoy this beautiful camp, either relaxing on your private deck, by the pool, in the lounge or with a catnap on your bed - a chance to recharge from the early morning wake up calls! Around 4pm you set off for your afternoon activity, again toast the setting sun with drinks in the bush before returning to camp for dinner.

The next day follows the same routine, the classic safari schedule with an early morning and late afternoon activity and an enjoyable siesta in between. A chance to enjoy your lovely spacious room, the camp and refreshing swimming pool.

On your final evening your guide will advise you what time your flight to Kanana departs on the following day and you will plan your morning activity accordingly.

Day 4, 5 & 6 - Kanana Camp

This morning you once again rise early and set out for your morning activity, perhaps following up on sightings found the day before or tracking something new and exciting. One last chance to explore the Shinde area before you return for brunch. At a time to be advised the day before, your guide will transfer you to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Kanana, a flight of about 20 minutes. Landing in the west of the Okavango your Kanana guide will be waiting to transfer you to the camp, a drive of about 30 minutes.

Having enjoyed some refreshments in the company of your guide and now being settled into your room, use this opportunity to explore your new temporary Okavango home before you set off on your afternoon activity. Kanana is a private concession and as such offers a full range of land and water activities just like Shinde, so you are spoilt for choice. Your guide will discuss each of these options with you and assist you in selecting your preferences.

Setting out in the late afternoon for your game drive or boat ride excursion, you will stop for refreshing sundowners as the sun sinks below the horizon and the nocturnal animals begin to stir. Returning to camp with a spotlight, you will search for the big cats as they begin their hunting routine . Grab the opportunity to seek out those smaller nocturnal animals which we rarely see without the spotlight like genet, bush babies and caracals.

The next day is your first full day in Kanana and offers you the chance to explore deeper into the concession on game drives or by getting involved in some of the other exciting activities offered. The day begins with an early morning wake-up call and breakfast before setting off on your morning activity as discussed previously with your guide, either driving further into the concession, enjoying an informative guided walk or gliding through the waterways on a traditional mokoro.

Return to the camp for brunch and siesta during the heat of the day. During the lat afternoon, you will again set off for your chosen afternoon activity with your accompanying guide.

The next day follows the same routine and you will soon find that you easily fall into the safari ''routine'' with an early morning and late afternoon activity. By now the early morning activities begin to take their toll and a siesta will be most welcome. A chance to really enjoy the deck of your lovely room, the camp lounge areas and swimming pool.

On your final evening over a hearty dinner, your guide will advise you on your departure flight time to Dinaka Camp the following day and you will plan your morning activity accordingly.

Day 7,8 & 9 - Dinaka Camp

This morning you will enjoy one final activity at Kanana before setting off at agreed time for your 25 minutes flight to Dinaka, your last stop on the safari itinerary . As before, your allocated guide will be waiting at the airstrip for your arrival in order to transfer you to camp, a short 10 minute game drive away.

Dinaka is your final destination. Once you have settled into your room and explored the camp you will have time to relax a little before joining your guide for tea and refreshments and a discussions of the activities that lie ahead. The reserve offers a range of wonderful and exciting activities which showcase the best of this fascinating desert area including guided bush walks, an underground photographic hide, educational walks with the San bushman as well as morning, afternoon and nighttime game drives. A viewing deck offers amazing sunset views.

You will enjoy an afternoon activity on the day of arrival followed by a sunset drink as you soak up the spectacular Kalahari skies. Return to camp to a roaring fire and sumptuous dinner as you discuss the activities and schedule for the following day with your guide.

Over the next two days the now familiar safari routine continues with early morning wake up calls followed by breakfast and a morning activity returning for brunch and a siesta. During the late afternoon, once the heat of the day has subsided you depart for your afternoon activity which extends into the early evening hours.

The ecosystem here is home to many unusual and interesting creatures including the Brown Hyena and Black Maned Kalahari Lion and there are also excellent chances of seeing Rhino. Smaller creatures to be spotted include meerkats and aardwolf. There is plenty of opportunity during your stay to seek out these wonderful desert creatures.
