Bushman Plains Camp consists of just four tents, making it one of the smallest camps in the Okavango. This is an intimate, down to earth and immensely friendly little camp. The style is very simple but comfortable and truly authentic. Bushman Plain’s is classified as mobile camp and changes location within this wilderness concession of 370 000 acres, though never during a guests stay.
The Sekwana concession in the northern Okavango is one of the most scenic and the game viewing increasingly good, indeed it is fast becoming one of the best destinations in the Okavango. This is unspoiled wilderness with a range of habitats inviting a diverse range of wildlife. Lion, wild dog, leopard and hyena are frequently seen here. A string of pretty waterways and floodplains offer good opportunities for mokoro and boating when the flood arrives.
Activities here include game drives (day and night) mokoro and walking as well as a range of cultural activities. This is also one of the very few camps able to access the only Hot Air Balloon launch site in the Okavango, offering the unique opportunity for a balloon safari in the months from April-August. This is an additional cost and must be pre-booked, please ask for more details.
There four large tents at Bushman Plains all have en-suite bathrooms, each with flushing toilets and bucket showers (hot water is provided). Tents have twin or king-sized beds and solar lighting ensuring that the human impact on the surrounding environment is minimal. A mess tent with its own ‘veranda’ forms the central area of the camp where guests are made to feel welcome and where one can relax. The campfire, the focal point of any camp, is where bushman stories are relayed, and guest experiences shared. Enhancing this extraordinary experience are the hearty meals prepared by chefs who willingly serve your preference of delicious Western style food or various local dishes with fresh ingredients sourced from the area.
Game drives are the best and safest way to see big game and these are at the heart of the experience here. Whilst ensuring that guest safety is always paramount, game drives are interactive, and guests are encouraged to walk with the trackers and guides as they follow the spoor of animals through the bush. Afternoon game drives end in sundowners against backdrops of orange and red – hued skyscapes. Being a private concession, off-road driving is allowed as are exciting night drives using infrared spotlights to discover the more elusive nocturnal creatures.
Permanent water channels in the area afford exploration of the Okavango by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), viewing the landscape and smaller water-loving species such as reed frogs and water birds from a totally different perspective.
Guests are witness to the lifestyle and survival skills of our ancient ancestors who instinctively learnt the ways of the wild in order to exist. Nature is very sacred. The art of extracting medicine from various plants , the discernment of edible materials and plants, the skill of creating everyday tools such as toothbrushes from the bark and twigs of trees and the incredible manner in which bushman make use of animal behaviour to track other species of wildlife in the vicinity is absolutely fascinating – a once -in- a-lifetime opportunity for guests to interact with nature using their senses and natural instinct that often seems all but hidden to us.
Visits to camp by genuine bushmen from nearby Guidgwa Village enhance this cultural adventure. Activity filled days come to a close with traditional storytelling, music and dancing before resting under an African night sky full of stars.
