Duba Explorers Camp is a charming camp situated within the quintessentially scenic Okavango landscapes of the private Kwedi Reserve. Surrounded by the undisturbed wilds of a 33,000 hectare private concession this camp is perfect for wildlife connoisseurs who enjoy the elegant but unobtrusive style of the original 1920’s safari. Superb game viewing with morning, afternoon and evening drives, as well as boating when water levels permit, this great little camp offers a classic Okavango experience.
Duba Explorers Camp was at its genesis a research camp and the focus is still very much on fostering an understanding of the delicate interplay between local species and their relationship with this very special environment.
With authenticity the watchword at Duba, the camp has just five expedition-style tents. With views over the surrounding floodplains, these light and airy canvas tents are sited on slightly raised decking designed to naturally cool as they capture the breeze with their expansive screened windows. En-suite facilities include a flush loo, double basins and indoor shower. The main area is similarly airy, with an open-air design encouraging guest interaction.
Both Duba Explorers Camp and Kwedi Reserve, where it is located, are operated as a joint venture partnership between Great Plains Conservation and the local community represented by the Okavango Community Trust. Representing five villages in the Okavango Panhandle, the Trust receives a substantial real benefit by using their land for conservation.
Owned by the National Geographic filmmakers, conservationists and explorers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, the concession features in many of their wildlife documentaries and prides itself on providing close exposure to extraordinary wildlife, from predators such as lions and leopards to elephants and buffalo. The concession is also known for interesting Kalahari species like Aardwolf and Pangolins.
While particular dynamics of the lion and buffalo interactions made famous in the Nat Geo documentaries are constantly changing, the area continues to deliver a top Botswana safari experience, enjoyed from a top luxury camp.
