Harkness Safaris - Overview

Harkness Safaris is a family run mobile safari outfit, specialising in privately guided mobile safaris across Botswana, from the Okavango Delta to the vast and remote Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Renowned for exceptional guiding and a wonderfully warm, welcoming team, Harkness creates authentic safari experiences that feel both adventurous and effortless. Ideal for couples, friends and families seeking flexibility, privacy and genuine wilderness over traditional lodge luxuries.

Our View

This is the kind of safari I grew up with and still love today. Sleeping beneath canvas, listening to the sounds of the bush at night and spending your days exploring with an expert guide creates a connection to Africa that is hard to match. What I particularly love about Harkness Safaris is the atmosphere Andrew and his team create. For a few days, this becomes your own home in the Botswana bush – comfortable, welcoming and thoughtfully put together, with everything you need and nothing you don't. For travellers who value privacy, flexibility and exceptional guiding above swimming pools and wine cellars, Harkness Safaris is a wonderful choice, whether travelling as a couple, with friends or as a family.

Accommodation

Harkness Safaris offers a choice of two tent styles, allowing guests to balance comfort, style and budget. The spacious walk-in Meru Tents (3.5m x 4.5m) provide a more luxurious mobile safari experience, complete with comfortable beds, crisp linen, en-suite bathrooms and traditional bucket showers prepared with warm water by camp staff. A family option combines two Meru tents with separate en-suite bathrooms connected by an interleading corridor.

For travellers seeking a more affordable option, the compact Dome Tents (3m x 3m) are also fully en-suite and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay in the bush, including comfortable beds, fresh linen and classic safari-style showers. Whether you choose a Meru or Dome Tent, the focus is on authentic safari comfort and a close connection to the wilderness.

Camp Facilities & Dining

Harkness’ camps are intentionally lightweight, allowing them to move between safari areas as your journey unfolds. Facilities are naturally simpler than those found at a permanent lodge, but guests enjoy comfortable en-suite accommodation, a covered dining and mess area, and some of Botswana’s most scenic and secluded camp locations. Set in remote corners of the wilderness, camps are peaceful, private and designed to immerse you in the natural world around you. Lighting is provided by lanterns and solar lights, adding to the classic safari atmosphere.

The food is one of the highlights of the experience. Freshly baked bread, wholesome home-cooked meals and generous portions are served in beautiful bush settings, whether beneath a shady tree, around the campfire or under a canopy of stars. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice, and guests are often amazed by what the talented chefs produce from a mobile bush kitchen.

There is no Wi‑Fi in camp, allowing guests to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with the wilderness around them. Cameras, phones and other devices can be charged in the safari vehicle, where multiple charging points are available, while guides carry a satellite phone for emergencies.

Location

One of Harkness Safaris’ greatest strengths is the breadth of destinations they operate in. Safaris can include the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai Community Concession, Chobe National Park, Savute and the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Their mobile approach allows guests to experience multiple ecosystems within a single journey, from permanent waterways and floodplains to remote desert landscapes, while travelling with the same guide and camp team throughout.

Activities & Seasonality

Every safari is tailored around your interests and the regions visited. Activities may include game drives, walking safaris, mokoro excursions, boating and exceptional birdwatching. With a private guide and vehicle throughout, guests have the flexibility to linger at sightings, focus on particular interests and travel at their own pace.

Harkness is particularly well known for its expertise in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Andrew Harkness has spent decades exploring this remarkable wilderness, and few guides know the area better. While the Kalahari can be visited year-round, it truly comes alive during the summer months, when dramatic skies, seasonal rains and abundant wildlife combine to create one of Africa’s most rewarding and off-the-beaten-track safari experiences.

Harkness Safaris is a boutique, family-run operator specializing in privately guided mobile safaris across Botswana. Their ethos is simple: exceptional guiding, authentic experiences, and the flexibility to explore at your own pace.

Wildlife

Botswana is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, from elephant herds and big cats to endangered African wild dogs and exceptional birdlife. Depending on the season and areas visited, guests may encounter lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hyenas and vast herds of plains game. What sets Harkness apart is not simply finding the wildlife, but the quality of guiding and interpretation that helps bring the wilderness to life.

Families

As both a father and one of Botswana’s most experienced safari guides, Andrew Harkness understands what makes a family safari successful. Days can be tailored to suit the ages, interests and energy levels of your group, whether that means introducing children to tracking, spending longer at wildlife sightings or simply enjoying time together around the campfire. Family tent options are available, while the flexibility of a private safari ensures couples, families and groups of friends can all enjoy Botswana at their own pace.
