Kanana Camp is a hidden gem set on the Xudum River in the southwest Okavango. A luxurious tented camp traditionally offering both water and land activities, Kanana also boasts excellent game viewing. The area encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn trees, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals. Set on a private concession, activities at Kanana include game drives, walking, a sleep out option, as well as boating and mokoro dependent on water.
Kanana Camp beautifully captures the essence of a vintage Okavango Delta safari, the perfect balance between authenticity and stylish comfort. It is a delightful camp with a beautiful setting and has earned a loyal following over the years by those those have been charmed by its idyllic location, warm staff and great game viewing.
Guests are accommodated in eight spacious tented rooms, set on raised teak decks, offering breath-taking views across the waterways. Refurbished in 2019 the spacious tented rooms, all en-suite with private decks, are fresh and tastefully decorated in keeping with the natural surroundings. The tents are well spaced affording privacy, whilst still being within comfortable distance from the central dining and lounge area.
The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta, with excellent big game viewing on offer as well as some spectacular birding opportunities. The Pom Pom concession where Kanana operates is rich and varied, with riverine forest, open plains and wetlands. Dependent on the annual floods, the level of water transforms this dry camp into a true water experience and in the early months of the year you may actually be able to witness the visible spectacle of the water rising slowly around the camp.
Being in a private concession, a wide variety of activities are available at Kanana Camp and the focus of activities varies with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta waters. Your professional guide will assist in planning your wilderness-exploring days in the best way possible. Kanana Camp offers a sleep-out experience to guests staying three nights or more. Set just 20 minutes from camp in a prime location overlooking a busy pan- this treehouse features a bathroom and an open-air deck with a double bed on the second level. Sleep below the stars, safely tucked up on your raised deck, with your guide in a tent nearby, you will wake to enjoy sunrise from your deck and watch the plains game as they gather on the pan to warm themselves in the morning sun. Highly recommended!
Game drives in specially designed vehicles are hosted early in the morning and late afternoon into the evening which then become exciting night drives. Importantly, game drives are run with a maximum of four guests (unless travelling in a private group) ensuring a more personal and exclusive safari experience.
Alternatively you may explore the crystal clear waterways by mokoro or powerboat, and enjoy the magnificent variety of birds, plant and reptile species found in the area. Of special note is the birding in the area, the concession hosting a seasonal heronry that teems with activity from August through to the summer months, a true highlight at Kanana Camp which seems to convert many visitors into avid ‘twitchers’. Guided walks are highly recommended in this pretty area as well as fly or spin-fishing for tilapia, African pike and sharp tooth catfish.
