Mashatu Euphorbia Villas - Full Report

The newest addition to the Mashatu portfolio, Mashatu Euphorbia Villas, opened in 2020 and firmly placed Mashatu on the map of high-end African travel. This five star luxury lodge set high on a cliff face in a forest of euphorbia succulents with breathtaking views of the river and plains below. The expansive views over the Bojale River, the aquatic lifeline in this arid area of the Reserve, attracts a myriad of animals. Every villa affords views of the river and beyond – perfect for animal and bird-viewing. Elephant wanderings, night-time howlings, lyrical birds can be appreciated with complete privacy.

Your arrival is met with “the nest” deck that overlooks the reserve and tranquil ravine below, offering a spectacular view over Mashatu Game Reserve. The design of the camp and 8 luxurious villas is inspired by the pod of the Mopane tree, the main food source for most of the wildlife in the area during the dry months. Evening meals are served rotating between beautifully designed spaces around the lodge – from atmospheric boma nights under the stars to elegant indoor or private dining for a more romantic or exclusive experience.

Each villa offers plenty of space for reflection and luxury to delight in. The spacious and secluded villas each feature an expansive outdoor viewing deck with a heated plunge pool, inside and outside seating areas, king-sized or two ¾ beds, ensuite bathroom facilities include two separate WC’s, indoor and outdoor rain showers and an indoor free-standing luxury bath. In-room spa treatments can be arranged in the privacy of your own room.

Highly exclusive and personalised game drives are offered, with just 4 guests per vehicle, with the option of post-dinner night drives to explore Mashatu’s nocturnal wildlife and exceptional stargazing. Mashatu Euphorbia Villas is also an ideal base for enjoying some of the other adventure activities, including cycling safaris, photographic hide sessions, horse safaris (for experienced riders), and community visits.

Mashatu stands out for its incredible biodiversity, diverse terrain, rich vegetation and ecosystems which provide habitats for a wide-ranging and dynamic collection of wildlife. It is no wonder it is called the Land of Giants. With striking rocky outcrops and plentiful groves of the enchanting Baobabs as the backdrop to Africa’s largest elephant population on a private reserve. Predator sightings are plentiful ranging from lion to leopard, cheetah as well as hyenas. Birding enthusiasts will be happy in the huge variety and numbers of different species– particularly during the summer migratory months of November-April – with over 350 species in residence. However, Mashatu delights all year round, every season enjoying distinct differences and specialities. It is also worth noting there many important archaeological and paleontological found here.

Getting to Mashatu Euphorbia Villas has never been easier with direct flights between Mashatu and Johannesburg, as the Reserve has an international airport complete with immigration and customs facilities. Charter flights can also be arranged to connect with other safari destinations such as the Okavango Delta as well as other locations in South Africa, such as Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. By road, most visitors come in via South Africa’s Pont Drift border, then a short 2 hour scenic journey through the Reserve.

The lodge runs entirely off grid, powered by an advanced solar system and supported by a state-of-the-art water treatment plant. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the villas and communal areas. Please note, the lodge does not accommodate children under 16 years an each unit sleeps up to two people.
