Maxa is one of the newest and most exciting camps to arrive in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Located in a stunning corner of the northern Okavango overlooking a permanent lagoon, Maxa is an intimate camp with just 5 rooms offering a classic Okavango safari experience. A simple, elegant and beautiful camp – Maxa will offer safari goers the chance to explore the Delta on game drives, walking safaris and seasonal mokoro rides.

Maxa is the newest camp in the Ker and Downey Botswana’s portfolio- with such a solid pedigree behind it we expect this to soon become one of the most popular camps in the Okavango, once it has opened on 20th March 2025.

The camp lies in a wonderfully rich and varied location – at the bottoms of the panhandle, where the rich, clear headwaters of the Okavango meet the winding waterways of the Selinda Spillway. A fascinating patchwork of seasonal floodplains, lagoons and waterways stretch across this area – which forms the heart of the Kaza Transfrontier Park (an area half the size of California). This landscape forms a beautiful backdrop to some very rich and exciting game viewing.

With just 5 rooms, including a family room, Maxa is a small and friendly camp. It has a simple but practical and comfortable design, thoughtfully put together to ensure you have all you need. The tented rooms are set on raised decks, each with an ensuite bathroom inside, as well as an outdoor bathroom. The Maxa family tent has two bedrooms and a shared ensuite bathroom along with an outdoor bathroom.

Maxa camp is designed to comfortably immerse you into this beautiful corner of the Okavango Delta with all rooms maximising views of the wilderness. The free form lounge and dining areas are set below elegant canvas roofs, only partially enclosed by traditional clay walls, creating a cosy and intimate space while keeping you engaged with the surrounded nature.

The lounge and dining rooms envelope a courtyard area where picnic tables sit over white Okavango sand, offering guests the chance to dine under the stars at night and below the shade during the day. At the heart of the courtyard lies a termite mound that originally helped form this island above the Okavango waters. Adding to this lovely atmosphere is a wood fired oven producing pizzas and freshly basked bread and cakes.

Further along the riverine forest which envelopes the entire camp is a Sala – an outdoor area designed for relaxing while enjoying the beautiful natural setting. From this elevated deck overlooking the lagoon guests can relax on a cushioned day bed or on the suspected cargo net hammock. The perfect spot to relax between activities.

Activities at Maxa camp are designed to explore this wonderfully varied and beautiful area – game drives during the day and night are offered, as well as guided walking safaris and mokoro excursions. The Mokoro is the traditional dug out canoe historically used to navigate the Okavango waters, a wonderfully peaceful way to explore the Delta.

Maxa Camp is accessed by a short and thrilling helicopter flight from Shinde Airstrip- with stunning views across the Okavango Delta there could be no better way to arrive at this beautiful location.

Maxa Camp has is the creation of a partnership with Ker and Downey Botswana, the Mmagamka Trust and members of the Bukakhwe tribe who live in the village of Gudigwa.
