Wild Expeditions Camps In the Okavango Delta
Wild Expeditions takes a rather different approach to safari. It is a collective of owner-run camps and expeditions, brought together by people who had already spent many years working independently across Africa as guides, camp managers, ecologists and conservationists. The idea was to create small camps in remarkable wilderness areas and to do things rather differently from the larger safari companies.
In Botswana, this is particularly evident at Karangoma. One of the people behind the camp is Olatotse “Ola” Sarefo, an elder of the Gudigwa community who has both Bukakhwe San and Hambukushu heritage. Ola began his career as a guide in the mid-1990s and worked with some of the best-known safari companies in the Okavango before fulfilling a longstanding ambition to establish his own safari operation. Karangoma grew from his mobile safari business and has a particularly strong connection to NG12, where his family once lived.
The camps themselves are small, comfortable and deliberately unpretentious. The emphasis is on the safari experience above all else: excellent guiding, interesting wilderness areas and spending proper time out in the bush, rather than ever more elaborate levels of luxury.
Karangoma lies in the remote northern reaches of NG12, an area of floodplains, waterways and woodland. The camp’s connection with the local community is much more than an incidental part of its story, with local knowledge and culture forming an important part of the experience.
Wild Expeditions also has camps and expeditions elsewhere in Africa, but the philosophy is consistent: small-scale, owner-led tourism in distinctive wilderness areas, with conservation and local communities integral to the way the camps operate.
Karangoma
Karangoma is a small, exclusive safari camp created in partnership with local elder Olatotse Sarefo and rooted in Bukakhwe San and Hambukushu culture. Named after a Sembukushu word symbolising healing and ancestral connection, the camp offers guests a meaningful reconnection with nature and tradition. Set in a secluded part of the Okavango Delta, it features eight tented rooms and offers diverse activities such as game drives, walking safaris, mokoro excursions and cultural experiences
