Affordable Okavango Delta Safari

This six-night safari explores two of the Okavango’s most beautiful spots, staying in intimate and charming safari camps at excellent value. Experience land and water safaris throughout the year with everything from game drives and walking, to boating and mokoro. With great service, excellent guiding and picturesque landscapes, this itinerary offers affordability without compromising on the quintessential Okavango safari experience.

Your safari begins in the prime Shinde private concession in the northern Okavango region.

Shinde Footsteps is a small, personal camp that looks out on a beautiful lagoon. Entirely rebuilt in 2023, the camp retains the authentic and intimate style of the original, but with more comfort. Safari activities here are endless, with everything from game drives and walking safaris to mokoro and boating offered year-round.

After three nights in this remote private concession of the permanent Delta it is time to move on to the north-eastern corner of the Okavango, at the source of the Selinda spillway.

Maxa is the newest camp under the popular Ker & Downey portfolio. Set to open in March 2025, this small safari camp will focus upon exploration within a seldom seen, beautiful corner of the

Okavango Delta. With a network of permanent lagoons feeding into seasonal channels, expansive floodplains and rich woodland islands, the landscapes here are beautiful and varied. Explore exciting wildlife through game drives and walking safaris, or enjoy a relaxing mokoro safari along the winding channels.

While many camps in the Okavango are prohibitively expensive for many, this itinerary offers a genuinely affordable Okavango Delta safari – without compromising on the experience.

DAY 1 – Shinde Footsteps

On arrival in Maun Airport you will be met and assisted onto your charter flight to Shinde – a short scenic flight of about 30 minutes over the Okavango Delta. Upon landing, you will be met by your guide and enjoy a slow game drive transfer to camp of about 1.5 hours, depending on what you see along the way.

Overlooking a hippo-filled lagoon nestled within the treeline lies Shinde Footsteps.

Once you have settled into your room, you will then enjoy afternoon tea whilst your guide introduces you to the area, the camp, and the activities on offer. At an agreed time with your guide, you will meet and set out on your first activity, most likely a game drive stopping in a pretty spot to enjoy a sundowner drink, returning to camp as the sun sets. Spend some time by the campfire before enjoying dinner under the stars.

Day 2 & 3 - Shinde Footsteps

Wake up to an early breakfast before heading out on you chosen morning activity. As you get to midday, return to the shade of the camp and enjoy a delicious brunch and a siesta or maybe a dip in the pool. Later in the afternoon there will be high tea before heading out for your afternoon activity.

Over the next two days you will enjoy the range of activities offered in this rich and dynamic area. Perhaps combining a game drive to the location where you can enjoy boating and mokoro safaris, even having a try at some fishing.

Game drives during the day can turn into night drives after the sun goes down, a chance to take out the spotlight and lookout for some unique nocturnal species such as Springhare, African wildcat and the elusive Genet.

Guided walking safaris are also possible from Shinde Footsteps; enjoy a few hours out on foot with your guide, learning about the Okavango’s flora and tracking animals big and small.

Day 4 - Maxa

This morning, following your morning activity and a light breakfast an exciting helicopter transfer on to Maxa awaits. Take to the skies, equipped with a headset and pilot who will discuss the Okavango from a bird's eye view whilst you look out for animals.

After about a 15 minute flight, you will land at the beautiful Maxa in the far northern reaches of the Okavango at the start of the Selinda Spillway. Like Footsteps, Maxa is a small and authentic camp with lots of charm. The area is home to varied and plentiful wildlife with camp overlooking a pretty lagoon.

Once you have been introduced to the camp and settled in with some lovely afternoon tea and a chat with your guide you will head out on your first afternoon game drive or mokoro safari. Stop for drinks in a scenic spot, perhaps returning to camp with a spot light, looking out for nocturnal wildlife. Arrive back in camp to a roaring fire and dinner under the stars.

Day 5 & 6 - Maxa

Spend the next couple of days exploring this unique and diverse area. Game drives offer a chance to look for predators in the early mornings before they retreat into the shaded thickets in the heat of the day, or in the late afternoons as they begin to stir once temperatures drop.

Go out on mokoro safaris, or perhaps try your hand at some fishing. Walking safaris here also allow a chance to gain a deeper understanding of the African bush and for your guide to show off some of his expert tracking skills.

Day 7 - End of safari

Your departure time today will have been advised by your guide the day before, with your helicopter ready to meet you for another scenic transfer back to Maun. Your flight to Maun is scheduled to connect with any onward arrangements. Depending on the time of departure at camp you will have the opportunity to enjoy one final activity before bidding farewell to the Okavango.

The flight to Maun will take approximately 35 minutes, depending on stops along the way. On arrival a representative will meet you to ensure you connect to your onwards travel arrangements.

Flights to Kasane, for access to Chobe or to Victoria Falls can be arranged at an additional cost.
