Four Night Value Safari

This good value safari allows guests to experience the big game of the Okavango Delta at Mma Dinare Camp in the south of the Okavango as well as the unique aquatic nature of the delta at Gunn’s Camp. Both camps are very well located on private concessions and complement each other very well in their different environments and activities offered. Staying in simple but comfortable camps with a focus on the safari experience, this is a great four night itinerary.

This safari begins in classic Okavango landscapes, at Gunn’s camp where tall palm trees peer out over glistening waterways and wide open floodplains. Gunn’s Camp lies in a beautiful private concession in the western Okavango and offers guests a quieter, more reflective experience of the beauty of the Okavango Delta with tranquil mokoro and boat excursions. When water levels are very low, such as during drought years, mokoro and boating is not possible however game drives will be offered.

The camp overlooks Chief’s Island, where guided bush walks are conducted. Chief’s Island falls within the Moremi Game Reserve, which is famed for the superb game viewing, though it must be noted because it falls under park rules, firearms are not permitted so your guide will be unarmed. While big game roams this area and can be spotted on these activities, the focus here is instead on enjoying and learning more about this beautiful and unique eco-system and its smaller inhabitants too.

The second camp, Mma Dinare lies in the southern reaches of the Okavango, on the private Santawani concession, 67,000 acres shared by just two camps offering a very exclusive safari experience. Bordering the Moremi Game Reserve this area offers incredibly varied and exciting game viewing with good sightings of many different species including predators such as lion, leopard and even wild dog. Cheetah have even been spotted here. Good numbers of antelope are found here too, and the birding is very good as a result of the varied eco-systems.

For those with the time, an extra night at Mme Dinare is highly recommended, for a chance to enjoy more time in this game rich area.

Day 1 and 2 - Gunn's Camp

On arrival in Maun, Botswana you will be met by a representative and assisted onto your charter flight to Gunn’s Camp a short but beautiful flight of 20 minutes. On arrival you will be met by your guide and escorted to camp, a short walk.

Gunn’s Camp has a beautiful setting, within landscapes described as ‘true delta’. It offers a specialist experience focusing on water and walking activities with an emphasis on identifying tracks, learning about the unique natural ecosystems of the Okavango and understanding how it all fits together to work as well as it does. Mokoro rides and boating safaris through the Okavango channels offer a quintessential Okavango experience.

Having met the team and settled into your rooms you will enjoy some light refreshments as your guide introduces you to the surrounding environments and discusses the activities on offer. Later that afternoon you will set out on your first activity, returning for dinner and your first night in the Okavango.

The next day you wake early and after breakfast set off on your chosen morning activity, returning for brunch and a siesta during the midday heat. Later than afternoon you meet for high tea and depart for your afternoon activity, toasting the setting sun with a drink before returning to camp for dinner.

This evening your guide will advise you of your flight time to Mma Dinare camp the next day and plan your morning activity accordingly.

Day 3 and 4 - Mma Dinare Camp

This morning after your morning activity and light breakfast you bid farewell to Gunns Camp and fly south east to Mma Dinare, a short flight of about 20 minutes. On arrival your guide will transfer you to camp, a game drive of about 45 minutes. This is big game country so have your check list ready!

Mma Dinare Camp lies in a riverine forest overlooking the pretty and lush Gomoti channel and offers spacious tented rooms each with lovely views and decks. Built in 2018 the camp has a lovely fresh feel, thoughtful design and welcoming atmosphere. There is a pool to enjoy between activities. Activities focus on 4x4 game drives and mokoro rides (water levels permitting, usually only in peak season). Night drives are also offered.

Having settled into your new home and discussed your interests with your guide you will set off after high tea for your afternoon drive exploring the Santawani area. Perhaps driving along the Gomoti river to catch the animals as they come to drink or deeper into the forested areas, in search of the predators which begin to stir as the sun sets. Having enjoyed a sundowner in a scenic spot you return to camp with a spotlight looking out for those exciting nocturnal animals.

The next morning you wake early, and after a light breakfast you set off on your morning game drive- tracking the events of the night before when the predators are active. Early morning drives deliver some of the best game viewing as predators can still be active and your guide will point out the movements as he reads their tracks. Game drives last around 4 hours, with a coffee break in between. Returning to camp for a hearty brunch you will enjoy a few hours to yourself to enjoy your lovely room or have a refreshing dip in the swimming pool, before setting off again later in the afternoon.

Day 5 - End of Safari

The time for your flight to Maun will be finalized the day before and your guide will advise you what time you will be leaving camp. The flight will always be scheduled to connect with any onward travel arrangements. Depending on the time of departure, as discussed with your guide, you will enjoy one final morning activity and brunch before bidding farewell to the Okavango. The flight to Maun will take approximately 20 minutes, depending on any stops along the way. On arrival a representative will meet you to ensure you connect to your onward travel arrangements.

Flights to Kasane, for access to Chobe of Victoria Falls can be arranged at an additional cost.
