Where to go on Honeymoon in Botswana

Botswana has all the special ingredients for the perfect honeymoon destination. Apart from the superb game viewing and stunning landscapes this is home to a fantastic variety of intimate camps and exclusive safaris far from the crowds. Botswana pioneered the high yield-low impact tourism model to avoid the crowded scenes associated with the Masai Mara and Serengeti – it is a more expensive destination but this price tag delivers an incredibly excusive safari experience.

Because of its diverse landscapes a Botswana safari is able to host a wonderfully varied range of activities and exciting experiences to leave you with memories for life. Sleep under the stars on your own private stardeck, enjoy a balloon safari over the Okavango at sunrise, walk with orphaned elephants in the wilds of the Okavango, enjoy a private candle lit dinner on a floating dock in the heart of the Okavango. Zoom across shimmering salt flats in the Kalahari and whizz over the glittering waterways of the crystal waters of the Okavango Delta. And of course, all the traditional Okavango activities such as game drives, walking safaris, boating safaris, mokoro safaris, horse safaris cultural activities and so much more!

There are many wonderful romantic camps for a honeymoon safari in Botswana, here are just a few of our top picks. Always remember that everything we do is completely tailor-made so please get in contact to discuss your personal preferences and requirements and we will craft your perfect honeymoon itinerary.

SkyBeds

Snuggle up under the African stars on the top deck of your own private treehouse in the Botswana wilderness. The Khwai Skybeds is one of the smallest camps in Botswana, with just 3 starbeds, treehouse structures where the top deck features a sumptuous four poster bed with nothing more than a mosquito net between you and the stars. The starbeds overlook a waterhole which attracts elephants day and night, and their gentle purring can often be herd throughout the night. Truly magical. As for the sunset and sunrise views….you will want your camera ready!

San Camp

San Camp is achingly romantic. Set on the dramatic salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, its white billowing tents and almost Arabian style décor makes it a perfect choice for a honeymoon safari, not to mention the amazing list of activities on offer- explore these other-worldly salt pans by quad bike, horse, foot or 4×4. Sleep out on shimmering white salt flats which offer 180 degree view of the spectacular stars. It’s jammed packed with experiences and photogenic landscapes

Xugana Island Camp

Xugana Island Camp has one of the finest settings in the Okavango. This charming traditional camp lies on a small island overlooking a permanent deep water lagoon peppered with lilies and home to honking hippos! This is a simple but delightful camp, with a true castaway island feel. The chance to dine privately on floating candlelit deck in the middle of the lagoon is not to be missed. The helicopter safaris from here are some of the most dramatic and beautiful too.

Little Vumbura

Little Vumbura is one of the most popular camps in Botswana- and with good reason! A small camp with just 6 tents set on an idyllic island in the Okavango matches up to everyone’s dream Okavango setting. This intimate camp offers superb year round game viewing both on land and water, and the private dinners set up in secluded locations in camp add to the romantic experience.

Pelo

Pelo means heart in Setswana, the local language – where better to stay on your honeymoon than on a heart-shaped island?! Pelo is a lovely little camp, very rustic but with a beautiful setting and offers classic water safari activities. Perfect for the adventurous honeymooners out there.

Baines Camp

Two very special features make Baines Camp stand out as a particularly perfect camp for a honeymoon safari. This lovely little camp has just 5 tented rooms set high on a raised platform – each features a large outdoor deck which the king-size beds can be rolled out onto, creating an instant star bed experience. Sleep beneath the stars, with all your creature comforts on hand. The other fantastic feature is the elephant interaction – enjoy a morning walk with a pair of orphaned elephants in the Okavango wilderness and then sit down to a champagne brunch to toast the experience while they browse around you. A truly special and once in a life time experience.

Kwara

Kwara Camp is the only camp in the Okavango to set a minimum age requirement at 18- meaning this is a peaceful adults only safari camp. Perfect for honeymooners. Kwara Camp lies on one of the most game rich corners of the Okavango, with permanent water, and enjoys year round game viewing, so a superb safari experience is guaranteed year round.

Tuludi

Tuludi is one of the hottest new properties in the Okavango and causing quite a stir. This is a beautiful new luxury camp set in a pretty corner of the Khwai Private Reserve and the experience s nothing short of spoiling, perfect for a honeymoon. The rooms are ridiculously spacious and beautifully appointed with large private decks featuring a plunge pool overlooking the game rich plains. The overall experience here is slick but friendly and there are a number of fun quirks to the camp – the slide from the treehouse library, set 4m high into the canopy, being one!

Mombo

This list would not be complete without including Botswana’s most famous camp! Mombo means ‘place of plenty’ and the game  viewing is true to name. The animals are plentiful and the safari experience top notch. This is one of Botswana’s flagship premier camps and it has the price tag to match, those who can withstand the eyewatering rates will be rewarded with superb game viewing and incredibly personalised service.

Duba Explorers

The Duba area has been the location of many award winning Nat Geo documentaries, the game viewing is always interesting and exciting and the landscapes beautiful- this is your  chance to step onset and live your own Nat geo experience! Duba Explorers is a beautiful little camp with a romantic vintage style. Its rates are more affordable than it’s smarter sister camp Duba Plains. The camp was co-founded and designed by the filmmakers and really captures a romantic sense of adventure.

Feline Fields

Not a big game destination for sure, but you will struggle to find a more luxurious spot to begin or end your Botswana itinerary. This is the ultimate Kalahari retreat and ideal for honeymooners looking for a couple of days to relax after the stress of travel and to recharge before the safari proper begins- and the 5am starts! Equally good at the end of a safari too. Feline Fields offers a truly spoiling safari experience in a Kalahari environment, with excellent accommodation, food and facilities. They also offer one of the best and most authentic bushman experiences. A must for anyone interested in this fascinating culture.
