Beagle Expeditions

Providing one of the finest, most authentic and adventurous safari experiences in the Okavango Delta, Beagle Expeditions is a small owner run mobile safari outfit founded by Simon Byron, one of Africa’s best guides, with a wealth of experience and passion for the African bush. Unusually for the Okavango, these mobile expeditions take place on the exclusive Abu private concession. All trips are private, tailormade and include a variety of activities depending on the season.

Beagle Expeditions is a unique private  mobile safari for true adventurers where the luxury is measured by the quality of the guiding, the location, exclusivity and unique experiences – not the king size beds and plunge pools. Beagle Expeditions run a simple camp- this is rustic but comfortable, with everything you need and nothing you don’t. Lightweight camps allow for more flexibility and adventure – these are expeditions with purpose. Though simple the camp is of a high standard and thoughtfully put together – expect extremely comfortable mattresses, lovely linens, superb food and a fantastic team to look after you. These are some of the best meals we have experienced anywhere in the bush!

Beagle Expeditions, also known as Kweene Trails, aims to return the natural spirit of adventure to safaris – where the increasingly luxurious permanent camps have begun to distract from the real essence of a safari, with elaborate spas, gyms and their extravagant rooms and dining – Beagle expeditions strips back the luxurious trappings and instead concentrates on the experience itself. No safari is the same – each will depend on the season and local conditions, but all are packed with adventure and sure to deliver an unforgettable experience. Walking safaris are very much at the heart of Beagle, though 4×4 game drives, boating and mokoro safaris are also part of the experience, water levels permitting. Game drives allow you to explore deeper into this concession, and to approach predators safely. At the heart of any safari on the Kweene Trails is superb guiding- Simon and his team of guides are at the top of their game and you can expect a truly exceptional guiding experience. And this ultimately what a real safari is about.

Beagle Expeditions have exclusive rights to operate in the pristine wilderness of the Abu private concession in northern Botswana. Tucked into the southern section of the concession, a untouched area – this is truly wild and off the beaten track. It must be stressed how rare this is. Most mobile safaris in Botswana operate in national parks and therefore are restricted by park rules – with no off-roading, night drives or walking – and with other visitors too.

Being so remote with such a limited road network, the area is best reached by helicopter. This offers a superb introduction to the area and indeed there are a number of helicopter safari experiences which can be built into each itinerary.

Mobile camps are lightweight by nature – all camp duties are carried out by a team of efficient staff. Guests do not participate in any camp duties- instead concentrating on the safari experience. Guests sleep in 3m x 3m dome tents (and are high enough to stand in) with ground mattresses – the bedrolls are very thick and comfortable, and the linen a fine cotton. The tents each have an en-suite bathroom area, with a bucket shower (with hot water) and a bush loo.

Dining is usually under the skies at night- and here is where the luxury shows itself. The food is varied, healthy and wholesome seasonal fare served with fine South African wines.

Beagle Expeditions is a small family run business – Simon and Marleen are a husband and wife safari power couple. Simon Bryon is a Conde Naste Traveller top 25 safari guide – his incredible talent, wealth of experience and success in the industry allows him to concentrate on the quality rather than quantity of safaris these days, operating on maximum of 100 days on safari a year, approximately 10 safari expeditions.
