With a fantastic location on the banks of the Kwando River in the far north of Botswana, Lagoon Camp offers a superb big game safari from a tranquil waterside setting. One of only two camps on the vast Kwando concession, a remote, wild and game lively area, Lagoon Camp offers a very exclusive safari experience. Lagoon is a traditional, pleasant camp with a simple style and focus on exciting game drives and serene boat cruises.
The Kwando private reserve on which Lagoon Camp is set is a staggering 230,000 hectares of pure wilderness stretching across the north of Botswana, along the Kwando River which forms the border with Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. This is one of the most exclusive and remote safaris experiences in Botswana, a safari purists haven. The area is particularly productive during the dry months from May to October, when the elephant numbers are astounding. The area has impressive of predator numbers too, with lion, hyena and leopard frequently seen. Notably this is one of the best areas in African for seeing the rare wild dog.
Lagoon Camp is a very pleasant but unassuming camp with a simple and comfortable style – allowing the beautiful setting to speak for itself and the excellent guiding to deliver the terrific sightings. The camp is set along the banks of the Kwando River (which becomes the Linyanti and then Chobe River) beneath the shade of tall leadwood and knobhorn trees. All rooms enjoy river views and a private deck from which to enjoy the comings and goings of the river. Inside the rooms are extremely spacious those simply decorated, with a lounge and sleeping area as well as an en-suite bathroom with both inside and outside showers.
The two main areas are open sided thatched structures with lovely views of the river, linked by wooden walkways, with the bar and lounge on one side and the dinning area on another. An inviting pool surrounded by a wooden deck draws the eye immediately on arrival, with wonderful river views it is a popular spot to relax between activities.
Activities focus on morning, afternoon and night drives in open 4×4 vehicles with a guide and tracker, a unique feature to Kwando safaris, and rare in Botswana. No more than 6 guests per vehicle ensures all enjoy a ‘window-seat’. Bush walks are also offered, local conditions permitting – mostly dependent on the elephant numbers in the area and thickness of the vegetation. Riverboat trips are also offered along the Kwando river, water levels permitting. The double deck feature on the boats allows for fabulous views over the reed and some enjoyable game viewing, though these boat cruises are as much about enjoying the beautiful and peaceful water environments as anything else.
Lagoon is a well-established, friendly and down to earth camp with experienced guides and an excellent track record for delivering exciting game viewing. A no-frills but extremely exclusive and productive safari experience.
