Mombo Camp - Overview

Mombo Camp is a flagship Botswana camp, one of the finest in Africa, offering superb game viewing and an extremely luxurious safari. With a prime location on Chief’s Island and some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the Okavango, Mombo is on the wish list of many safari travellers.

Our View

The real hero at Mombo is what lies beyond the deck. Few camps have shaped Botswana's safari reputation quite like Mombo, and it remains one of Africa's great wildlife destinations. The accommodation and service are exceptional, but it is the chance to spend time in one of the Okavango's most productive wildlife areas that continues to draw travellers from around the world.

Accommodation

Mombo’s eight elevated suites are connected by wooden walkways, each enjoying extensive views across the game-rich floodplains. Built from stretched canvas over timber frames, they feel light and open, with large sliding doors framing the landscape beyond.

The interiors are contemporary yet unmistakably African, with warm timber, natural stone, leather and woven textures creating a refined but understated feel. Soft, neutral tones reflect the colours of the surrounding floodplains, while handcrafted furniture and carefully selected artwork add character without competing with the landscape beyond.

Outside, each generous deck features a private plunge pool and shaded sala, creating the perfect place to relax between game drives as wildlife wanders across the floodplain. Inside, the spacious suites include a King size bed, separate lounge, dressing area and well-stocked minibar, while the elegant bathrooms feature indoor and outdoor showers, a freestanding copper bath and twin vanities.

A discreet air-conditioning unit above the bed helps ensure a comfortable night’s sleep during the warmer summer months.

Every detail has been carefully considered, combining exceptional comfort with a strong connection to the surrounding wilderness.

Facilities & Dining

Mombo Camp’s elevated main area enjoys sweeping views across the surrounding floodplains. Guests have a choice of comfortable indoor and outdoor lounges, a library, wine cellar and a generous swimming pool that is large enough for a leisurely swim between game drives. Private dining comes as standard, allowing guests to enjoy fresh, beautifully prepared meals at their own pace, complemented by an excellent selection of South African and international wines.

Mombo Camp is unusual in offering a well-equipped, air-conditioned gym with the same sweeping views across the floodplains, allowing guests to work up an appetite between the seemingly endless and delicious meals. Equipped with both cardio and strength-training equipment, it is a genuine fitness facility rather than simply a token gym.

For those looking to unwind, The Sanctuary offers a sauna and a range of spa treatments. Guests can choose to enjoy treatments in one of the peaceful treatment rooms or in the privacy of their own suite, making for a wonderfully relaxing way to spend an afternoon between game drives.

The curio shop and interactive learning centre is shared with Little Mombo, it’s smaller sister camp.

Location

Mombo is located at the divergence of the main Okavango River into two channels. Being extremely fertile, the area where Mombo Camp is situated claims some of the highest densities and diversity of wildlife in Southern Africa. Long known to the local people, the Yei and Xaniqwe, the area was named ā€˜ā€™Mombo’’- the Yei word for ā€œthe place of plenty.ā€

Today, the camp occupies a prime position on the north-western edge of Chief’s Island, once the royal hunting ground of Chief Moremi, whose name is now synonymous with one of Africa’s finest protected areas.

Mombo Camp lies on the private Mombo concession, on the north western edge of Chief’s Island, within the Moremi Game Reserve. This is the greatest land mass in the Okavango and has long been renowned for its prolific wildlife. This is also a beautiful area offering quintessential Okavango landscapes, with glistening waters peppered with white and pink lilies, open floodplains and palm tree islands.

Ably complementing the extraordinary game viewing, the camp itself has majestic views of a scenic floodplain from beneath huge African Ebony and Sycamore Fig trees. The area boasts large and consistent numbers of plains game as well as good predator numbers.

Mombo Camp is accessed by scheduled light aircraft from Maun or Kasane to Mombo Airstrip, followed by a short game drive to camp, which often provides the first wildlife sightings of the safari.

Activities & Seasonality

Mombo Camp offers twice-daily game drives led by some of Botswana’s most experienced guides. Located within the Moremi Game Reserve on Chief’s Island, activities are governed by reserve regulations, meaning there are no night drives and off-roading is limited. However, the area’s exceptional wildlife densities and experienced guiding ensure consistently rewarding sightings.

Following the exceptional Okavango floods of 2026, Mombo Camp also reintroduced water activities when conditions allow. Typically from around June and October, depending on annual flood levels, guests may have the opportunity to explore the Delta by boat or traditional mokoro, offering a completely different perspective on this iconic landscape. Scenic helicopter flights over the Okavango Delta can also be arranged at an additional cost.

Wildlife viewing is rewarding throughout the year, although the experience changes with the seasons. The drier months from May to October typically offer the easiest game viewing as wildlife concentrates around the remaining water, while the green season (November to April) transforms the landscape, bringing dramatic skies, migrant birds and the arrival of many young animals.

Open-sided 4×4 game viewing vehicles explore the concession with focus being on the area’s incredible wildlife and large concentrations of plains game supporting equally large populations of predators. Big cat sightings, especially of lion, are frequent.
