Musesenji River Camp, Lower Zambezi - Overview

Musesenji River Camp is a luxury safari camp opening in April 2027 in Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park. Set at the confluence of the Zambezi and Musesenji Rivers in the park's remote eastern sector, it offers a more secluded safari experience than many camps in the area. With just six tented suites, private plunge pools, guided walks, boat excursions and game drives, it is ideal for travellers seeking both comfort and a genuine sense of wilderness.

Musesenji River Camp, Lower Zambezi - Full Report

What immediately stands out about Musesenji River Camp is its location. Occupying an elevated peninsula at the confluence of the Zambezi and Musesenji Rivers, it is the easternmost camp in the Lower Zambezi National Park and offers access to one of the least-visited areas of this remarkable wilderness. With accommodation for just fourteen guests, the emphasis is firmly on space, exclusivity and immersion in the natural environment.

The camp is owned and operated by Ker & Downey Zambia, a company with a long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality safaris in some of Zambia’s most attractive wildlife areas. Together with its sister company, Ker & Downey Botswana, it has become particularly well known for placing camps in exceptional locations and combining warm hospitality, strong guiding and increasingly luxurious accommodation.

Accommodation consists of five luxury safari tents and one family tent, accommodating a maximum of fourteen guests. Each tent features air conditioning and a private plunge pool, placing Musesenji firmly within the luxury safari category while maintaining a strong connection to its natural surroundings. Positioned to take advantage of sweeping views over the surrounding rivers and floodplains, the tents offer a comfortable base from which to explore this remote corner of the Lower Zambezi.

One of the region’s greatest attractions is the diversity of activities available, and Musesenji River Camp will offer the full range of experiences for which the Lower Zambezi National Park is known. Guests can explore the area on game drives, guided walking safaris and boat excursions along the Zambezi River. The ability to experience the landscape both from the water and on foot adds a level of variety that few safari destinations can match.

Covering more than 4,000 square kilometres, the Lower Zambezi National Park protects a diverse mosaic of riverine woodland, floodplains, islands and escarpment scenery. Wildlife viewing is typically excellent, with large elephant herds, lion, leopard and wild dog among the area’s headline attractions. The river supports healthy populations of hippo and crocodile, while birdwatchers can enjoy more than 430 recorded species.

What particularly appeals to us about Musesenji is the sense of remoteness it promises. While many visitors naturally focus on the better-known central areas of the Lower Zambezi National Park, Musesenji has been deliberately positioned in a quieter and more remote section of the reserve. For travellers seeking a luxury Lower Zambezi safari with a stronger sense of exclusivity and wilderness, this is likely to be one of the camp’s greatest strengths.

Musesenji also combines particularly well with other destinations in Zambia. The camp is located close to Kulefu Airstrip and has been designed to work alongside Ker & Downey Zambia’s wider portfolio, including King Lewanika Lodge in Liuwa Plain National Park. Together, these camps offer the opportunity to experience two of Zambia’s most remote and contrasting safari regions within a single itinerary.

Musesenji River Camp operates seasonally from April through to November, in line with the traditional Lower Zambezi safari season.

Although Musesenji River Camp is still under construction, both Ker & Downey Botswana and Ker & Downey Zambia have built strong reputations for excellent guiding, attentive service, consistently good food and, perhaps most importantly, camps in exceptional locations. Based on our experience of their existing properties, we expect Musesenji to offer a similarly high standard of safari experience. We will continue to update this page as the camp develops and more information becomes available. In the meantime, please do get in touch if you would like our latest thoughts on the camp or advice on whether it would be a good fit for your safari.
