Lower Zambezi National Park

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest safari destinations, the Lower Zambezi National Park lies along Zambia’s southern border with Zimbabwe, protecting more than 4,000 square kilometres of wilderness along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Together with Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park on the opposite bank, it forms one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife ecosystems.

What makes the Lower Zambezi particularly special is the combination of exceptional wildlife viewing and a remarkably varied landscape. The Zambezi River is the defining feature, creating a mosaic of channels, islands, riverine woodland, winterthorn forests and open floodplains, all set against the backdrop of the distant Zambezi Escarpment. Few safari destinations offer such a dramatic contrast between water and wilderness.

Wildlife in the Lower Zambezi

Wildlife is abundant throughout the park. Large herds of elephant and buffalo are commonly encountered, while lion, leopard and spotted hyena are all regularly seen. The area also supports one of Zambia’s healthiest populations of African wild dog. Birdwatching is outstanding, with more than 400 species recorded. Interestingly, giraffe are absent from the Lower Zambezi, making it one of the few major safari destinations in southern Africa where visitors should not expect to see them.

Activities in the Lower Zambezi

The Lower Zambezi is renowned for the variety of safari activities available. In addition to traditional game drives, many camps offer boat safaris on the Zambezi River, guided walking safaris and canoeing excursions, allowing guests to experience the landscape from a range of different perspectives. This combination of land- and water-based activities is one of the park’s defining attractions and helps set it apart from many other safari destinations in Africa.

What Makes the Lower Zambezi Special?

The Lower Zambezi remained relatively undiscovered for much of the twentieth century. Overshadowed by more famous safari destinations elsewhere in Africa, it saw little tourism development and retained much of its wild character. Even today, the park feels noticeably quieter and less commercialised than many of Africa’s better-known reserves, with tourism centred around a small number of intimate camps rather than large lodges and busy safari circuits.

Beyond its wildlife, the Lower Zambezi is perhaps best known for its atmosphere. The presence of the river shapes every aspect of the safari experience, from dawn boat cruises and canoeing excursions to evenings spent watching elephants feed along the riverbanks below camp. Combined with relatively low visitor numbers, exceptional guiding and some of the most beautiful scenery in Africa, the result is a safari destination that feels both relaxed and deeply connected to its natural surroundings.

For many travellers, this balance of excellent wildlife viewing, beautiful scenery and varied activities is what makes a Lower Zambezi safari so memorable. Rather than spending every day solely on game drives, visitors can experience the landscape from the water, on foot and from camp itself, creating a more varied and immersive safari experience.

When to Visit the Lower Zambezi

Most camps operate seasonally from April through to November. During Zambia’s rainy season, from December to March, the region’s black cotton soils become extremely difficult to navigate and many roads become impassable. As a result, the majority of safari camps close during this period before reopening as conditions improve towards the end of the rains.

For travellers planning a Zambia safari, the Lower Zambezi offers a compelling combination of excellent game viewing, beautiful river scenery and a sense of wilderness that has become increasingly rare elsewhere in Africa. It remains one of the continent’s most rewarding safari destinations.
