Okavango Explorers Camp

Okavango Explorers Camp found in the beautiful location on the Selinda Spillway. Continuing the Great Plains’ track record of excellent camps together with an interesting game viewing with a variety of predator action.

Okavango Explorers Camp lies on the banks of the beautiful Selinda Spillway which links the two iconic river systems of Botswana – the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti. The area is known for its amazing elephant numbers in the drier months, when up to 9,000 elephants descend on the spillway waters. The reserve is home to impressive predator populations too, while the beautiful open plains teem with game.

Okavango Explorers Camp offers a more affordable option for those looking to explore this magnificent corner of Botswana. The camp will particularly appeal to those looking for a more authentic safari experience, those unconcerned by the trappings of luxury and wishing to focus on the wildlife of this famous reserve.

No one captures the spirit of the vintage safari era quite as well as Great Plains– their camps find the perfect balance between authenticity and luxury, always with a true sense of place. The luxury levels vary but the simple elegance and classic style is always there. Okavango Explorers Camp is no exception. Like the rest of the camps in the Explorer collection, Okavango Explorers Camp is an intimate tented camp in the style of the original 1920s safari campaign – tasteful, comfortable and in tune with its surroundings. Sleeping a maximum of 12 guests this is a small and friendly camp.

Okavango Explorers Camp lies in the south west of the vast and beautiful Selinda Reserve, a 130,000 hectare sanctuary which it shares with its sister camps, Selinda Camp, Zarafa Camp and Selinda Explorers Camp . This is a fascinating and beautiful area, and rich in wildlife. The game viewing is particularly good when the spillway flows in the driers months, May to October, as these life-giving waters attract and in incredible  variety of wildlife in large numbers.

The landscape lends itself to a variety of activities with a variety of land and water environments – from deep flowing channels to lily covered wetlands open plains and forests. On land guests from Okavango Explorers Camp will explore the reserve with 4×4 game drives and on walking safaris, when water levels allow canoeing and mokoro safaris will be offered too. Fishing is also offered on a catch and release basis.

Okavango Explorers Camp lies on the exclusive Selinda Reserve,  especially well known through various National Geographic films made by the camp’s film-maker owners Beverley and Derek Joubert and watching one of their films, such as the “Birth of a Pride” is a wonderfully way to build anticipation of your forthcoming safari to this wonderful reserve.

Great Plains Conservation are behind some of the finest camps in Botswana, including Duba Plains, Selinda Camp and Zarafa Camp which are also some of the most luxurious in Botswana. Their portfolio is wonderfully varied however and Great Plains also offer less luxurious but equally charming camps on a more affordable level such as Selinda Explorers Camp and Duba Explorers Camp – Okavango Explorers Camp is designed to complement these Explorer camps with the same style and level of luxury.
