Amber River Camp has a classic barefoot luxury style and welcoming atmosphere, it offers an intimate safari experience with just six tents. Located on a permanent water channel surrounded by palm treed islands, this area is always teeming with game.

Amber River Camp, like its sister Little Maru, is situated south of the Okavango, the NG32 a community concession in the very south of the Okavango Delta. It offers mixed safari activities in a game-rich area of varied ecosystems and vegetation. Riverine forests, open grasslands, acacia and wild sage and waterways dotted with small islands and palms are all landscapes waiting to be explored within reach of Amber River Camp.

The tents at Amber River Camp are generously sized and incorporates Okavango Hidden Gems’ unique innovation of temperature regulating tent ceilings. Only six spacious canvas tents in this lodge, each set on raised decking with views of the floodplain in front, which can also be enjoyed from the outdoor bath. The rooms are supplied with luxury toiletries and high quality linens and towels and also have power points and standing fans.

Experience the pristine and unspoilt biosphere of the unique Okavango Delta through the lens of the stylish quality of a bygone safari. The main area or ‘Map Room’ is also under canvas and has a library well stocked with fascinating books on the flora and fauna of the Delta. The swimming pool and sun loungers look over the lagoon. Sit by the firepit after dark for the campfire under the stars experience.

Although the camp lies on a channel with permanent water, the location in the extreme south of the Delta means that the water from the annual flood reaches here last. This results in an area of varied habitats: in addition to the permanent water and palm treed islands there are also large areas of floodplains that are often dry. In those dry areas lion concentrations are high, wild dog are seen particularly in October/ November and cheetah frequent the plains. The lagoon itself is fringed with papyrus, is home to hippos and also attracts a multitude of birdlife. The permanent water means that mokoro is offered all year round.

The mix of dryer floodplains and wetlands results in a wide range of game sightings at Amber River Camp. Plains game such as giraffe, zebra, warthog and a range of antelope including impala, tsessebe and reedbuck are likely sightings. Sable, roan and sitatunga are not. Elephant herds are seen when the dry season is ending and lone elephants at other times. Lion in good numbers, leopard and cheetah frequent the concession. Birdlife exhibits a rich mix of shallow water birds such as waders and the plains support quelia, shrikes, lilac breasted rollers and francolin, guinea fowl and even ostrich as well as being a good area for raptors such as bataleurs. Bird watching enthusiasts will find the summer months December to March particularly good.
