Sitatunga Private Island

Sitatunga Private Island is an extremely exclusive camp, set deep in the beautiful waterways of the Northern Okavango, Sitatunga Private Island offers a more tranquil safari, with quintessential Okavango water activities such as mokoro rides, boating and fishing, as well as walking safaris. With the same excellent safari standards delivered by the Relais & Chateaux group.

Sitatunga Private Island Camp and Suite opened in 2023 and is an extremely exclusive camp with just 2 units, as well as a separate 2 bedroom Suite. The intimate setting is found on a pristine private island in the Duba Concession of Botswana’s Okavango Delta- the perfect peaceful retreat.

The camp continues the same beautiful style of all the Great Plains Conservation camps, with elegant but understated luxury, authentic and tasteful décor and excellent service. Sitatunga Private Island Camp’s style commemorates the great fishing cultures of the Okavango. The structure design is inspired by the fishing basket, nestled in the thick ebony forest canopy and built in the same high standards of the other Great Plains camps such as Zarafa, Selinda and Duba Plains – and certainly a visit to these camps would complement the itinerary.

Sitatunga Private Island Camp is named after the beautiful and elusive sitatunga, a rare swamp-dwelling antelope specially adapted to living in these aquatic conditions. Given the location deep amongst the glistening waterways of the Okavango activities at Sitatunga Private Island mainly  offers water-based activities such as, boating, mokoro excursions and fishing – on catch and release basis between March and December. Continuing with the slow safari style, walking can be done after a 1 hour boat ride from the camp. These activities offer the chance to escape the buzz of the 4×4 game vehicles which are the foundation of most safaris, and instead to connect more deeply with the stunning environment around you with more peaceful activities such as walking, mokoro and boating.

This lush corner of the Duba concession is one of the most scenic areas of the Okavango – made famous by the award-winning Nat Geo filmmakers and conservationists Beverly and Derek Joubert who later founded the camps here. As Sitatunga Private Island is a water based camp, see their three-part documentary Okavango River of Dreams to better understand the dynamics of this water way.

It perhaps is not surprising that a luxury camp built by professional photographers, Beverly and Derek Joubert, even offers a complimentary use of top photographic gear. The Sitatunga Private Island has a professional camera set with additional lenses available for guests use in each room, as well as high-quality binoculars. Photos will be downloaded to a storage device on guest’s.

The Sitatunga Private Island Suite, is a completely private area away from the other camp. The air-conditioned two-bedroom suite has its own lounge and dining area, as well as wide decking and private swimming pool. Exclusive use of the Sitatunga Private Island Suite comes with private boating and walking actives.
