Thamo Telele

One of the loveliest places to stay in Maun, Thamo Telele lies on the Thamalakane River and has the distinction of being Maun’s only private game reserve. Though only 12 kms from the Airport, Thamo Telele is a haven of peace in the wilderness, the perfect stop-over before or after your safari. Close encounters with the resident giraffe herd are a highlight, as well as game drives, bush walks and horse riding.

Previously known as Royal Tree Lodge, this camp underwent a full refurbishment and rebranding when it joined the Natural Selection portfolio of safari camps in October 2021. Now under new management with a stylish revamp Thamo Telele is one of the nicest places to stay near Maun. As well as updating all of the rooms a private villa has been added, perfect for small groups and families.

Various giraffe themed decorations are found throughout the lodge – a nod to the lodge’s namesake who recently joined the resident herd. The lodge was named after the youngest resident giraffe, born during the refurbishment of the lodge in 2021. Surprisingly tall from birth (even for a giraffe!) she was soon called Thamo Telele, meaning ‘long neck’ in Setswana.

The resident herd of 20 giraffe at Thamo Telele may steal the show but the reserve is also home to a variety of other animals including: Eland, Kudu, Ostrich, Impala, Springbok and Zebra. An impressive variety of birdlife inhabits the riverine areas and the drier acacia-lined pans. Game drives, walking and horse riding are all offered here. Rides are suitable for every level of rider. While there is plenty of wildlife there are no predators, elephants or buffalo on the reserve – all of which means you can safely explore this charming reserve on foot or horseback. This can be a refreshing burst of freedom for those who feel confined to the 4×4 on safari. This is particular good for children- who can burn off some energy in the bush around the camp!

Thamo Telele has 11 rooms, with 9 luxury tents and 2 chalets. All rooms are ensuite, air-conditioned and have a private verandah to enjoy quiet time listening to the sounds of the African bush.

The 10 luxury tents are spacious and comfortably equipped with all you need, including tea and coffee making facilities. The light and bright decor creates a friendly atmosphere and the giraffe theme touches offer a nod towards the resident herd never far from the lodge. Set on raised wooden platforms, all the tents are set in secluded locations below the shade of leadwood and acacia trees. The tents have indoor and outdoor shower options to suit all tastes.

The two chalets at Thamo Thelele are perfect for families or couples. The rooms feature a king-sized 4 poster-style bed, a luxurious sunken bath looks out to a beautiful panoramic view, and  outdoor showers. Additional sleeping arrangements can be made to accommodate 2 children.

Hosted dinners and fireside conversation contribute to the authentic and personalised accommodation experience. The central area and bar are perfect for enjoying social time or relaxing poolside. There is a 20 metre lap pool to cool or work up an appetite for the next delicious meal.

Wifi is available in the main area.

For those looking for the bigger game and predators day-long game drive safaris to Moremi Game Reserve are also offered (at additional cost) with one of Botswana’s most well-known guides to experience a truly memorable Big Game safari.
