Tumani Tented Camp - Overview

Tumani Tented Camp, opening June 2026, is an owner-run Botswana safari camp in the Mbabe region of Botswana, on the southern edge of Chobe National Park. From the team behind MmaTsebe, it offers an intimate, well-priced safari in a wild, crowd-free area known for exceptional wildlife moving between Chobe and the Okavango Delta, delivering excellent game viewing without the crowds.

Tumani Tented Camp - Full Report

The camp itself is small and traditionally styled, with just eight tented en-suite rooms and one family unit accommodating up to five guests. Each tent is raised on a deck and positioned for privacy, with either double or twin bed configurations, all under mosquito nets. Interiors are simple and well judged, combining comfort with practicality, including a flush loo, hot shower, double vanity, wardrobe, safe, writing desk and seating area.

A defining feature at Tumani is the inclusion of private star decks, accessed via an exterior staircase from each tent veranda. Each deck is set with a double bed and mosquito net, allowing guests to sleep out under the night sky as part of the core experience rather than an optional extra. These are available seasonally, typically from March through to the end of October, depending on rainfall.

The main guest area at Tumani is spacious and relaxed, set under thatch with a combination of indoor and outdoor dining and lounge areas, an all-day bar, swimming pool and surrounding deck, as well as a fire pit for evenings under the stars. A small curio shop and library add a thoughtful touch. A separate Wi-Fi lounge provides Starlink connectivity, while the rest of camp remains intentionally disconnected, with no internet in the guest rooms or main areas.

Perhaps most notably, Tumani represents outstanding value for this part of Botswana. It offers access to a highly regarded wildlife area, low visitor density and a high standard of guiding and hosting, all at a more accessible price point than many camps in comparable regions. This is a camp that delivers a genuinely authentic safari experience without compromise, making it a compelling option for those seeking both quality and value in northern Botswana.

Tumani sits in the Mbabe region of Botswana, a landscape long known to local guides and Botswana specialists for its extraordinary wildlife, yet only now beginning to receive the wider recognition it deserves on the safari circuit. This is a transitional environment where the Okavango Delta and Chobe ecosystems meet, creating a rich mix of floodplains, woodland and open grassland. At its heart lies the Mababe Depression, a vast, shallow basin that transforms with the seasons—filling during the summer rains to form a broad marsh, before gradually receding through the dry months into nutrient-rich grazing lands that continue to hold water and draw wildlife from miles around. The character of the area shifts accordingly, from greener, more dispersed wildlife in the wet season to increasingly concentrated game as water becomes scarce, offering a varied and consistently rewarding safari experience.

Although just 25 kilometres from MmaTsebe Tented Camp, the experience here is distinct. Mbabe feels wilder and more remote, with fewer camps and a greater sense of space. Wildlife densities can be exceptional, particularly for elephant and predator, but sightings often unfold without the presence of multiple vehicles. It is a quieter, more immersive safari, with a strong sense of being slightly off the main circuit.

As with its sister camp, Tumani is independently owned and run, and this is reflected in the atmosphere and attention to detail throughout. Owner-run camps in Botswana tend to offer a more personal and flexible experience, with a clear sense of care in both guiding and hosting. The pace is unhurried, the approach is considered, and the overall feel is one of quiet confidence rather than formality.

Activities are centred on game drives through the Mbabe concession and into southern Chobe, an area particularly well known for large elephant herds, strong predator sightings and seasonal concentrations of plains game. The diversity of habitats ensures that wildlife viewing remains varied and rewarding throughout the year, often with very few other vehicles encountered.

While Tumani pairs naturally with MmaTsebe from a logistical perspective, it should be seen as a complementary rather than similar experience. MmaTsebe offers a more classic Khwai setting with access to water-based activities, whereas Tumani is defined by its drier landscapes and the scale of its wildlife movements. Together they create a well-rounded safari, but Tumani stands comfortably on its own as a destination in its own right.

Families are welcome at Tumani, with a minimum age of six years. Families travelling with children aged six to eleven are required to book a private vehicle at an additional cost to ensure flexibility and safety. Children under the age of eleven are not permitted on walking or water-based activities unless specially authorised, and certain activities may be adjusted depending on conditions and guiding considerations.
