Elephant Pan Camp

Set below a cathedral of mopane trees and overlooking a busy waterhole, Elephant Pan (previously known as Hyena Pan) lies in the far north of the Khwai Private Reserve just below the Chobe National Park. Elephant Pan is a rustic but comfortable camp with a friendly atmosphere offering an affordable safari experience. Elephant Pan is best visited in the dry season when the waterhole attracts huge numbers of elephants and other animals. The photo hide is a great experience.

After a refurbishment in 2024 Hyena Camp reopened in 2025 under a new name – Elephant Camp- which better reflected the star attraction of this camp. A steady stream of elephants visit the permanent waterhole in front of the camp, almost guaranteeing close up encounters with these magestic animals – certainly during the dry season (May-November) and very probably during the greener months too. Take a look at the livestream video link above to check for yourself!

The focus at Elephant Pan Camp is on land activities and the concession is explored on morning and afternoon game drives. Other full day drives explore the banks of the Khwai River with walking safaris allowing guests to get close to nature. The camp has access to two ground level hides which offers spectacular photographic opportunities- often a highlight for many guests to Elephant Pan.

Elephant Pan Camp has eight simple but comfortable tented rooms, all with private ensuite bathrooms. The tents are simply decorated, splashes of colour from local beads and artefacts add a welcoming atmosphere. Cameras and batteries can be charged through each tent’s international adapter, powered by solar panels. Wifi is available in the main lounge area.

The main guest area overlooks the waterhole and comprises a spacious dining deck as well as comfortable seating areas, a sun deck, and pool deck with a rim-flow splash pool. The open air boma with camp fire provides excellent opportunities to view game at night. The camp also has a small reference library.

The Khwai Concession and, more particularly, the Khwai Private Reserve provides an incredible combination of space, exclusivity and fantastic wildlife encounters. The concession borders both the world famous Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park with Elephant Pan Camp itself only 12 kilometres north of the Khwai River. Common species include elephant, buffalo, general plains game as well as wild dog, lion and leopard. This conservancy is operated in partnership with local families.
